Whey Protein and Weight Loss


A mixture of globular proteins isolated from whey, the liquid substance which is created as a by-product of cheese production is called whey protein. Some preclinical studies in rodents have suggested that whey protein may possess anti-inflammatory or anti-cancer properties and contain antioxidants that help reduce cell damage by free radicals. Every person needs different amount of protein according to age, weight, sex, activity level and overall health. Different categories of people like athletes, body builders, people with special medical needs, dieters etc. need more protein than a normal people. It fulfills the requirement of those for supporting the depreciation of body muscles, bones and on the whole health.

If whey protein is taken excessively and even in normal situations like for people who are lactose intolerant, it can have dangerous side effects. Kidney functions can be affected negatively by whey protein consuming in very high quantities. Liver damage also may be caused by an extremely high dose of whey protein exerting unbearable pressure on liver.
So, it should be avoided taking excessive whey protein to keep its side effects at bay. In general, it is suggested taking about 1 gram of protein (or a little less) per pound of one's body weight. 25 grams of whey protein per day may be taken by training athletes. Bodybuilders who want some serious body muscle gains may consume 150 grams per day but only for those who are practicing exercise heavily.
